“Vheissu” – Thrice
Overview: Vheissu starts off with “Image of the Invisible,” which is a strong starting song. It’s somewhat inspirational, but most importantly, gets the energy flowing for the rest of the CD. The next few songs on the CD are more of what the CD is about. They take an experimental approach to music using different sounds and effects for ambience. “The Earth Will Shake,” Thrice’s primary encore song, also incorporates many experimental techniques fusing “a cappella” with a strong heavier sound. This CD seems to flip flop every other song from ambient to hard rock, keeping all types of listeners interested. Also, a clear Christian theme pops up frequently in the songs on this CD with track names like “The Earth Will Shake” and “Like Moths to Flame”.
Lyrics: The lyrics in Vheissu do not have one particular theme. The lyrics vary from the topic of religion, to a charity (Invisible Children Foundation), to a dedication to Miles Davis (For Miles). All in all, the lyrics are well written, and have deep meanings to keep the mind entertained. Score (8/10)
Likeability: Vheissu has a wide array of styles and sounds to keep most listeners interested. Each song has its own uniqueness and sound, so chances are you will find at least one song on the CD you will like. The CD even has its own radio hit single and a couple of music videos, which Thrice had never really done in the past before this CD came out. Score (8/10)
Sound: Thrice’s sound has progressed so much when this CD was being made. It was the stepping stones from what they used to be and what they are today. The sound on this CD is extremely unique during this time period, with the experimental influence involved. Vheissu is a milestone for their career, and how far they have come. As for difficulty and what it sounds like, the record is like a Buddhist temple with anger issues. It is always ambient and peaceful, but every now and then, a fast-pace, kick ass song is thrown in your face! Score (10/10)
Overall Score (9/10): This CD is amazing and I strongly recommend you at least listen to a couple of songs. Songs to check out are:
Of Dust And Nations
The Earth Will Shake
Red Sky
For Miles
Like Moths to Flame
